Moving Beyond the Uncertainty

I am always amazed at the uncertainty that a New Year brings. For many, including me, it creates anxiety and worry about things that we often have no control over. Still the uncertainty is there. In years past, I have dealt with the uncertainty by making resolutions. As I investigated by journal, I found that my resolutions for the last seven years have been basically the same. Out of the last seven years I found only two resolutions that I kept. Both of them required very little effort on my part however. The others, well, let’s just say are still a part of who I am.
A part of who I am. Could that be the reason for not achieving the resolutions or is it just an excuse?
Many of my personal resolutions are like other persons; lose weight, get out of debt, spend more time with family etc. Sadly, these goals fall short every year before the new year really gets started. Why?
Reading further in my journals, I found two reasons that I believe lend to the breaking of the resolutions.
First, I only addressed them the first day of the New Year in my journal. As the days and weeks go by, my attention moves to other things going on in my life and ministry. Second, I never invited God to be my leader, and Jesus to be my partner in these resolutions. Sadly, it was all about me.
Luke 1:37 tells us that “All things are possible with God.” God is the certainty amond the uncertainty. This year, my resolutions are fewer than in the past with only two and God is very much the center of both. Next year at this time, I hope to tell you about how for the first time in eight years, my new year’s resolutions were kept and my heart transformed to be more like God’s will for my life.
Certainty is found in a loving God whose grace is sufficient for all things. Blessings to all of you and Happy New Year
